Nelliankulam Parish

Christians seem to exist from the year 1800. From 1800 to 1883, Nelliyankulam was attached to Pinnapoondi under the Mill Hill Fathers of Pondicherry. In 1884, Fr. Ovey a French missionary, built a priest-house and a small Chapel at Nelliyankulam and resided there. That old house is now used as the school. In 1900, Nelliyankulam was attached to Vandavasi la 1918, Fr. Bestide, the Parish Priest of Vandavasi, started a school at Nelliyankulam. He also built a Chapel at Nallur. This Chapel was extended by Fr. John Valarkott in the year 1974. In 1925 Fr. S. Paul built a Chapel at Mazhavankaranai. It was during his time, in the year 1928 that this mission was handed over to the Salesian fathers, and given to the Archdiocese of Madras. In 1944, the present priest-house was built. In 1947, the present Church was Constructed and on the 16th of August, 1947, Archbishop Mathias blessed the new Church and Fr. S. T. Ignatius was appointed as the first Parish Priest of this new Parish of Nelliyan- kulam. In 1958, Fr. M. Gnanapragasam built the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, Fr. V. F. Xavier built St Joseph, Chapel at Hosur and Bishop David blessed it on 193-1969. He also built the Church of St. John Bosco at Mazbavankaranai and the Pro-Nuncio, the Most Rev. Joseph Caprio, blessed it on 26-1-1969. On 4-6-1976, Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, Madurai, opened a new Convent at Neiliyankulam Their convent building was blessed and opened by Bishop Antony Muthu on 21-11-1976 and Mr Ignatius, V. G blessed and opened the Good Samaritan Dispensary which was put up recently. Today, the Parish consists of 9 substations and 1,760 Catholics. There are three schools in the Paris. The present Parish Priest is Fr. A. Philomen Raj.
