Koratampet Parish

Fr. Francis Laynis (Later Bishop of Mylapore) founded the Mission of Kottampet, the art in the kingdom of Vellore, in the year 1683. The whole village belonging to the caste of Mudaliar was converted. In 1740 when the Mahrattas moved to Gingee and Vellore, one Fr. Joseph. Du Trumbley was in charge of Athipakkam. (S. Arcot) and Kortanipet (N. Arcot). He has left written that one of his churches was plundered and another burnt down. 21 villages in which the best portion of his flock lived were sacked Many Catholics were murdered and others were taken slaves. The remaining Catholics were compelled to wander about in the wood and hills. One day a group of Mahrattas, Moors and soldiers of petty kings fell upon the village of Kortampet which was entirely Catholic and which had a Church and a House. The men of the village escaped by running away, the women and girls numbering about 50 hid themselves the Church und behind locked doors went on reciting the Holy Rosary. The soldier ransacked the whole village inn part of the Priest’s House without suspecting any One to be hiding in the Church. An episode of the protection of our Blessed Lady is Narrated thus A young Catholic girl was pursued by a Mahratta soldier. She tried to hide herself among tushes, recommending herself to the Blessed Virgin The girl would have certainly been caught and ill-used, had sot a sake hit the soldier who in a short moment Sell dead. In 1841 the Church at Kortampet was completed. It measured 60 feet by 15 ft. I. 1554 the number of Catholics in Kortampet Mission was 1429, Then the Mill – Hill Fathers and the Salesians of Don Bosco worked tirelessly till the new Diocese of Vellore was formed in 1952. Fr, Tranier and Fr. David have left the Imprint of their work in the Mission. The Parish Church was newly built and blessed in March 1964 by Bishop David, but it has been lately repaired. Today this mission is cared for by the Vincentians. Its total population of Catholics is about 1.500, as Chengam and many other substations were formed into a new Parish.
