Uriyurkuppam Parish
The Mission of Ururkuppam in the continuation of the Mission of Thakkolam. The Mission of Thakkolam was founded in the year 1702 by Fr. Mandayat SJ. Later on, Fr. Verance Bouebet. Who took the name Sanjeevanather in Tamil, took charge of the Mission and had Thakkolam as his headquarters at the superior of the Missionaries In the persecution of 1703, he was arrested. Later he was released There is a story even now that two of his Missionaries were killed and hurried at Thakkolam, over whose tombs the Hindus have built their temple. But no document for the same the Catholics of Uriurkuppam are of Telugu origin. The first families to arrive at Uriurk appam seem to be from Andhra Pradesh in the year 1784. The first Church was built in the year 1852. It was dedicated to Mary Help of Christians Fr. Swaminathar was looking after the Christians of Ururkuppam. On 27th May, 1944. Fr. T. V. John was appointed as the first Parish Priest of Urimekuppam Parish In 1946, Ft. A. Antonisamy took charge of the mission and made many improvements. After bim, many Parish Priests changed within short periods. In 1953, Fr. S. Divita, SDB., took charge of the mission. During his time, the Primary school was upgraded to Middle school His monumental work, the Mary Help of Christians Shrine, exists today to tell stoic of things and person. The drinking water project started by bim, and followed up by Fr. Jacob, S.D.B., wan completed by Fr. Thomas Naldu, S.D.B. The present Parish Priest is Fr. M. Packlasamy. The Parish consists of 1,146 Catholics.
