Parishes
Diocese of Vellore comprises of two civil districts namely Vellore and Thiruvannamalai. It is grouped under eight vicariates. There are 87 canonically erected parishes and two mission stations. All the parishes have resident priests. In 22 parishes there are also Assistant Parish Priests at present. Most of the parishes have substations. Many parishes are remote villages having poor road facility. Only a few parishes are self-sufficient out of the 89 parishes.
Twenty nine of the parishes were erected canonically by the late Archbishop Louis Mathias SDB, before the erection of the Diocese of Vellore. Of the remaining fifty eight parishes:
- Four Parishes were handed over by the Archbishop of Pondicherry -Cuddalore in November 1969;
- Sixteen parishes were erected after the formation of the Diocese.
- Between 1979 and 1981, five new parishes were erected.
- In 1982, five more new parishes were canonically erected.
- Between the years 1985 to 1987, three more new parishes were erected.
- And in 1989, three new parishes were erected canonically.
- Bishop A.M. Chinnappa SDB had erected 17 parishes canonically and 2 mission stations with resident priests from 1995 to 2002.
- Bishop Soundararaju SDB erected two new parishes.
The entire territory of the Diocese is so divided into proper boundaries that no part of the Diocese is left without the care of a priest. However, there is still the possibility of further divisions of parishes. The Complete list of Parishes is given below:
